Evergreen grass grows in both in the sun and under the shade as well.

Kikuyu grass is a vigorous invasive and fast spreading perennial grass native to East Africa that is used for both forage for livestock and turf grass. It is known for its high summer growth, aggressive root system and tolerance to drought, heat and low fertility.

Evergreen generally refers to specific blends of cool season grass varieties that maintain their colour year-round, even though winter, unlike warm season grasses (like Kikuyu) which go dominant and turn brown. These blends are popular for their consistent aesthetic appeal, particularly in regions with cold winters, such as the South African Highveld.

Key Characteristics of Evergreen Grass

  • Year -round Greenery -The primary benefit is maintaining a vibrant green colour throughout all four seasons, including winter frosts
  • Composition – Evergreen lawns are typically a mixture of different tuft and runner varieties, often including fescue and rye grass.
  • Moderate maintenance – They require less frequent mowing than fast growing Kikuyu but need consistent watering and feeding to thrive year-round especially in winter.
  • Shade tolerance – many evergreen blends do well in a range of light conditions, from full sun to semi-shade provided they are maintained correctly

Maintenance tips for the Evergreen Grass

  • Watering – water deeply and less frequent (e.g. twice weekly) to encourage a deep root system, which improves drought resistance.
  • Mowing – maintain a cutting height of 30 to 40 mm. Avoid removing more than one-third of the blade length at a time to prevent stress on the grass.
  • Fertilization – apply a balanced fertilizer 3 to 4 times a year during active growing phases (Spring, early summer, late summer. A final fertilizer application in the late autumn can help strengthen roots for winter.
